Swedish Meatballs with Chicken
Swedish meatballs are a traditional and popular dish from Sweden, typically made with a mixture of ground beef and pork. However, you can certainly make a variation using chicken instead. Here's a delicious recipe for Swedish meatballs with chicken:

Ingredients:

For the meatballs:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground chicken
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (for frying)

For the gravy:

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (optional)
  • Lingonberry jam or cranberry sauce (for serving)

Instructions:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground chicken, breadcrumbs, milk, chopped onion, minced garlic, chopped parsley, egg, ground allspice, ground nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Mix everything thoroughly until well combined.

  2. Shape the chicken mixture into small meatballs, about 1 inch in diameter. Place the formed meatballs on a plate or baking sheet.

  3. In a large skillet or frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the chicken meatballs to the pan in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Cook the meatballs for about 3-4 minutes per side until they are browned and cooked through. Transfer the cooked meatballs to a plate and cover to keep them warm.

  4. To make the gravy, in the same skillet, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat. Add the all-purpose flour and whisk continuously for about 1-2 minutes to create a roux.

  5. Gradually pour in the chicken broth and heavy cream, whisking constantly to avoid lumps. Cook the gravy until it thickens and reaches your desired consistency.

  6. Season the gravy with salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce (if using) to taste.

  7. Add the cooked chicken meatballs back into the skillet with the gravy. Gently stir to coat the meatballs with the sauce.

  8. Let the meatballs simmer in the gravy for a few minutes to absorb the flavors.

  9. Serve the Swedish chicken meatballs with gravy over mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or rice.

  10. Optionally, accompany the dish with lingonberry jam or cranberry sauce on the side, as is traditional in Swedish cuisine.

Enjoy your delicious and comforting Swedish meatballs with chicken!
