Kentucky Fried Chicken (Copycat Recipe)

Making a copycat recipe for Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) at home can be a fun and delicious way to enjoy the flavors of this iconic fast-food chain. While it may not be exactly the same as the original, it can still be very tasty. Here's a basic recipe for making homemade KFC-style fried chicken:

Ingredients:

For the Fried Chicken:

  • 2 pounds (900g) chicken pieces (chicken drumsticks, thighs, or breasts)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons paprika
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon dried thyme
  • 1 tablespoon dried basil
  • 1 tablespoon dried oregano
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon black pepper
  • 1 cup buttermilk (or regular milk with 1 tablespoon vinegar or lemon juice)
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

For the Coating:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, dried thyme, dried basil, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper. Mix everything well to create the seasoning mixture.

  2. Dip the chicken pieces in buttermilk, making sure they are fully coated.

  3. Dredge the chicken pieces in the seasoning mixture, pressing the mixture onto the chicken to adhere well.

  4. Place the coated chicken pieces on a plate and let them rest for about 15-20 minutes to allow the coating to set.

  5. In the meantime, heat vegetable oil in a large frying pan or deep fryer to 350°F (175°C).

  6. In a separate shallow dish, combine the coating ingredients: flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, dried thyme, dried basil, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper.

  7. Dredge the chicken pieces again in the coating mixture to create a second layer of coating.

  8. Fry the chicken pieces in batches in the hot oil until they are golden brown and fully cooked. The internal temperature of the chicken should reach 165°F (74°C).

  9. Place the fried chicken on a wire rack or paper towels to drain any excess oil.

  10. Serve the homemade Kentucky Fried Chicken while it's hot and crispy.

Note: The key to achieving a crispy and flavorful coating is to let the chicken rest after the first dredging, which allows the coating to adhere better. Also, using a cooking thermometer to check the internal temperature of the chicken is essential to ensure it's fully cooked.

Enjoy your homemade Kentucky Fried Chicken with your favorite sides and dipping sauces for a delicious and nostalgic meal
