Homemade Chinese-Style Orange Chicken
Homemade Chinese-style orange chicken is a delicious and popular dish that features crispy battered chicken pieces tossed in a tangy and sweet orange sauce. It's a crowd-pleasing favorite that you can easily make at home. Here's a simple recipe for you:
Ingredients:
For the chicken:
- 1 lb (450g) boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs, cut into bite-sized pieces
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 large egg
- Vegetable oil, for frying
For the orange sauce:
- 1/2 cup orange juice
- 1/4 cup chicken broth or water
- 3 tablespoons soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons rice vinegar or white vinegar
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 1 tablespoon orange zest (from about 1 orange)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons water
For garnish:
- Green onions, sliced
- Sesame seeds (optional)
Instructions:
In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, salt, and black pepper. In a separate bowl, beat the egg.
Dip the chicken pieces into the beaten egg, allowing any excess to drip off, and then coat them in the flour mixture, pressing lightly to adhere the flour to the chicken.
Heat vegetable oil in a deep frying pan or wok over medium-high heat. Fry the coated chicken pieces in batches for about 3-4 minutes on each side or until they are golden and crispy. Remove the fried chicken from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
In a saucepan, combine the orange juice, chicken broth (or water), soy sauce, rice vinegar (or white vinegar), honey, orange zest, minced garlic, grated ginger, and red pepper flakes (if using). Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat.
In a small bowl, mix 1 tablespoon of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of water to create a slurry. Slowly pour the slurry into the simmering orange sauce, stirring continuously until the sauce thickens. Cook for another minute or two until the sauce reaches your desired consistency. If the sauce is too thick, you can add a little water to adjust the consistency.
Add the fried chicken pieces to the orange sauce and toss them gently to coat each piece evenly.
Garnish the homemade Chinese-style orange chicken with sliced green onions and sesame seeds if desired.
Serve the orange chicken immediately with steamed white rice or your favorite side dish.
Enjoy your homemade Chinese-style orange chicken! It's a delightful combination of sweet, tangy, and savory flavors that will surely satisfy your taste buds
