Ingredients:
For the Crispy Tofu:
- 1 block (14-16 ounces) firm tofu

- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- Vegetable oil, for frying
For the Sesame Sauce:
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce or tamari (for a gluten-free option)
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
- 1 tablespoon maple syrup or honey (for a non-vegan version)
- 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
- 1 green onion, sliced (for garnish)
Instructions:
Start by pressing the tofu to remove excess water. Wrap the block of tofu in paper towels or a clean kitchen towel. Place it on a plate and put a heavy object, like a skillet or a cutting board, on top. Let it sit for about 15-30 minutes to drain.
While the tofu is pressing, prepare the sesame sauce. In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce or tamari, sesame oil, rice vinegar, maple syrup or honey, grated ginger, minced garlic, and sesame seeds. Set the sauce aside.
Once the tofu is pressed, cut it into bite-sized cubes.
In a shallow dish, mix the cornstarch or arrowroot powder, salt, and black pepper.
Toss the tofu cubes in the cornstarch mixture until they are evenly coated.
