Tuna Noodle Casserole is a classic comfort food dish that typically includes canned tuna, egg noodles, a creamy sauce, and various additions like peas, mushrooms, or cheese. It's a popular and easy-to-make dish that's often baked in the oven, resulting in a delicious and satisfying meal.
Here's a basic recipe for making Tuna Noodle Casserole:
Ingredients:
- 8 ounces egg noodles (or any pasta of your choice)
- 2 cans (5-6 ounces each) of canned tuna, drained
- 1 cup frozen peas (optional)
- 1 cup sliced mushrooms (optional)
- 1/2 cup diced onion (optional)
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (or any other cheese you prefer)
- 2 cups milk
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons butter
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1/2 cup bread crumbs (optional, for topping)
- 2 tablespoons melted butter (optional, for topping)
Instructions:
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a baking dish.
Cook the egg noodles according to the package instructions until they are al dente. Drain the cooked noodles and set them aside.
In a large saucepan, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. If you're adding onions or mushrooms, sauté them until they are tender.
Stir in the flour and cook for about a minute, creating a roux.
Gradually pour in the milk while continuously stirring to avoid lumps. Cook the sauce until it thickens and becomes smooth.
Add the drained tuna, frozen peas (if using), and half of the shredded cheese into the sauce. Stir until everything is well combined.
Season the sauce with salt and pepper to your taste preference.
Add the cooked egg noodles to the sauce mixture and stir until the noodles are fully coated.
Transfer the mixture to the greased baking dish and spread it out evenly.
If desired, sprinkle the remaining shredded cheese on top of the casserole.
Optional: In a small bowl, mix the bread crumbs with melted butter and sprinkle it evenly over the top of the casserole.
Bake in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes or until the casserole is hot and bubbly, and the top is golden brown.
Allow the casserole to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy your delicious Tuna Noodle Casserole!
