Cast Iron Skillet Pizza

Cast iron skillet pizza is a fantastic way to make a delicious, crispy, and flavorful pizza at home. Using a cast iron skillet helps create a perfectly cooked crust with a beautiful golden-brown bottom. Here's a simple recipe to make a cast iron skillet pizza:

Ingredients:

For the pizza dough:

  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup warm water (around 110°F or 43°C)
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt

For the pizza toppings:

  • 1/2 cup pizza sauce or tomato sauce
  • 8 ounces (about 225g) shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Your favorite pizza toppings (e.g., sliced bell peppers, sliced onions, sliced mushrooms, olives, etc.)
  • Fresh basil leaves (optional)
  • Extra-virgin olive oil (for drizzling)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.

  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Gradually add the yeast mixture and olive oil to the dry ingredients. Mix until a dough forms.

  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. Shape the dough into a ball.

  4. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm, draft-free area for about 1-2 hours or until it doubles in size.

  5. Preheat your oven to the highest temperature it can reach (usually around 475-500°F or 245-260°C).

  6. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into two equal parts if you're making two smaller pizzas or use the whole dough for a larger pizza.

  7. Take a cast iron skillet and generously coat it with olive oil.

  8. Roll out the pizza dough on a floured surface to fit the size of your cast iron skillet. Carefully transfer the rolled-out dough to the skillet and press it gently to cover the bottom and sides of the skillet.

  9. Spread half of the pizza sauce evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges for the crust.

  10. Sprinkle half of the shredded mozzarella cheese over the sauce, and then add your desired toppings.

  11. Drizzle a little olive oil over the toppings and season with a pinch of salt and black pepper to taste.

  12. Place the cast iron skillet in the preheated oven and bake the pizza for about 10-15 minutes or until the crust is golden and the cheese is melted and slightly browned.

  13. Remove the pizza from the oven, and if desired, add some fresh basil leaves on top for extra flavor and presentation.

  14. Repeat the process for the second pizza if you have more dough.

  15. Slice the cast iron skillet pizza and serve it hot. Enjoy!

Cast iron skillet pizza is a great way to enjoy homemade pizza with a crispy crust and delicious toppings. It's a fun and versatile cooking method that allows you to get creative with your favorite ingredients
